Project Description

The Salasfa Education Project provides targeted, non-formal basic education to underprivileged shepherd children living in the rural expanses of Ethiopia. Because of extreme poverty, many of these children must begin working at a very early age to help support their families, leaving them completely unable to attend a standard school.

Through interactive and participatory learning techniques, this program combines foundational academic classes with creative craft sessions, group games, and role-plays. Our curriculum goes beyond text books, focusing on developing reading, writing, and artistic expression while building the self-confidence, emotional stability, and social skills these children need to thrive.

Project Background & Community Profile

Location: Salasfa Village is an interior community located roughly 180 km north of Addis Ababa in the North Shewa region. The village is highly isolated, with no reliable, paved motorable roads.

Demographics: The village is home to approximately 3,000 residents, including roughly 150 children between the ages of 8 and 14. Due to systemic barriers, nearly 80% of these children do not attend school.

Local Economy: Approximately 90% of families in Salasfa are landless agricultural laborers operating within a precarious subsistence farming system. Highly vulnerable to shifting rainfall and severe droughts, the area offers very few immediate opportunities for employment or social mobility, forcing most families to live below the poverty line.

Monitoring, Evaluation, & Staffing

To maintain the highest quality of instruction, the SEP Program Coordinator actively monitors daily operations. Every Saturday, our instructors participate in a critical review meeting to evaluate the concluding week’s progress and collaboratively map out the curriculum for the following week. A formal, comprehensive program evaluation is conducted at the close of the tenth month each year to plan funding and development timelines for the upcoming cycle.

We employ a program coordinator and two full-time instructors, making every effort to recruit qualified educators directly from the local beneficiary villages who possess a pre-degree educational qualification and a deep passion for working with children. They are supported by two part-time instructors specializing in vocational and technical training. All educators complete training under eminent educationists, formulating an occupation-centered syllabus built upon the Amharic basic education pattern.
